成立在1960年,發跡在1964年,搖滾音樂史上,被視為所謂:第一波英國樂勢力入侵(British Invasion)之中,與The Beatles 跟The Rolling Stones , The Dave Clark Five, The Kinks,等一樣最重要的樂團The Animals,於1964年至1970年之間,有過很多首傳誦至今的經典之作,例如:”The House of the Rising Sun”, “We Gotta Get out of This Place”, “It’s My Life”, and “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood”. “Don’t Bring Me Down”這幾首歌,在過去50年中,都曾由無數的藝人或樂團不斷地翻唱,甚至多次地再度成為暢銷單曲.
在 Rock-Edged Pop與 Blues Rock,Psychedelic Rock 之間取得絕佳平衡,創造The Animals傳奇歷史的重要因素,第一是他們擁有一位非常棒的主唱.Eric Burdon,第二是,創始團員鍵盤手Alan Price,以及後來接替他的Dave Rowberry,他們的Electric Blues 與1966年加入的bass, guitar, violin 手John Weider,供獻了The Animals 結合 Psychedelic Rock 的變化..這支樂團,在1969年末解體,70年代至90年代,仍有不斷地重組又解體.再重生.至今仍由第一代的鼓手John Steel 號召下維持著Animals and friends的名號…..Eric Burdon在一次訪談中就曾經說:”如果我們當年能夠少計較些個人的得失,可能,The Animals會在搖滾史上貢獻出更多的好音樂”.
1964年,The Animals以一首改編的民謠,”The House of the Rising Sun”,進佔全美冠軍.這首歌曲的成功,也引發了可能是搖滾史上最熱烈的歷史學論戰.因為,這首歌曲.一開頭說的”There is a house in New Orleans””They call the Rising Sun”清楚地有地名,有名字.”And it’s been the ruin of many a poor boy,And God I know I’m one”這可又有了故事…….
